TECHX LAB

Spring 2020 Workshop Overview

May 20, 2020 | Workshop

The TechX Lab hosts workshops presented by our student workers. These workshops are designed to provide unique experiences that a normal classroom setting can’t provide. We’ve presented four new workshops this quarter covering tech-related topics.

Our workshops for the Spring quarter were:

  • Docker Containers in VMware
    • This workshop was an overview of what docker containers are and how they could be used in VMware. Students were also shown and interacted with our VMware vSphere Cluster known as TechXplore.
  • Facial Recognition Using MatLab
    • This workshop showed off how to use MatLab to create a program that is able to detect faces using images. The program would also be able to compare facial images to find the closest match.
  • Advanced Scripting in Microsoft Excel
    • This workshop was a basic overview of the use of macros and Visual Basic scripting. These were used to implement features in spreadsheets that make it easier to perform specific tasks faster or more efficiently.
  • Making Video Games in VR
    • This workshop was a look into how video games can be made that implements the use of virtual reality. Students were also shown a custom-made game environment that is playable in virtual reality.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we had to change how our workshops were presented. All workshops for the Spring quarter were presented via Zoom, with some workshops needing to be retooled to fit this change. Despite the changes, this quarter was the most successful in having students attend our workshops (65 attendees total). In addition, there were many returning attendees from previous workshops.

The TechX Lab will continue to provide student-led workshops for the 2020-2021 school year. Be on the lookout for the next workshops for Fall 2020 on our Workshops page!
